Thesis Title:
Localization of Socio-Economic Facilities in Narsingdi District

Abstract:
Socio-economic facilities play an important role in the development of regions and affect the maintenance and reinforcement of people’s activity. Similar with the common scenario of most of the districts in Bangladesh, the distribution of socio-economic facilities in Narsingdi district is concentrated disproportionately rather than to an equitable and uniform manner. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of socio-economic facilities of Narsingdi district by using Location Quotient and Gini Index. A detailed analysis and investigation has been carried out to determine the disparities and deficiencies of some socio-economic facilities in different Upazilas of Narsingdi district. From the analysis it is found that certain Upazilas like Narsingdi Sadar and Shibpur have higher concentration of socio-economic facilities (e.g. primary school, high school, college etc.) and these upazilas are recognized as developed upazilas, while others upazilas lag far behind the mean level of the number of facilities. Some upazilas such as Palash and Raipura are deprived as not only deprived of different socio-economic facilities but also treated as backward upazilas. This study also examines the concentration pattern of socio-economic facilities in different upazilas and investigates all possible factors liable behind the concentration of the concerned facilities in some particular Upazilas. In some Upazilas certain factors are more responsible for their development in terms of socio-economic facilities. The forgoing analysis reveals that the distributions of facilities neither consider any socio-economic factors nor follow planning policies and strategies. Based on the outcome of the study, finally some policies and strategies have been provided for upgrading the distribution pattern of socio-economic facilities in Narsingdi district.
