SNV Netherlands Development Organisation has implemented a Program on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) to demonstrate financially viable and sustainable FSM solutions for cities and towns in Bangladesh during 2014 to 2017. This, in turn, improved the health and well-being of the urban population- in particular low-income groups working in sludge management, as well as slum residents are benefited from the new services. The Program aimed to make hygienic faecal sludge emptying services accessible and affordable to the urban poor through interventions that will make the sanitation sector more sustainable, competitive and dynamic. In Khulna city this program was implemented under the leadership of Khulna City Corporation (KCC).
In order to establish Khulna as a Model City, another project will be implemented for next three years (2018-2020) to develop city-wide inclusive sanitation services in Khulna, increasing access to safely managed sanitation and tripling the amount of human waste treated. The title of the project is ‘City Wide Inclusive Sanitation Engagement (CWISE)’. This project will be implemented in five towns in southern Bangladesh with different duration. For Khulna it is for three years. The program will use value chain development methodology and will contribute to sector knowledge and learning on urban sanitation.
