The three days long 5th International Conference on Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development (ICCESD 2020) held at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) on 7-9 February, 2020. The conference was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, KUET in association with the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), UK.

Inauguration Ceremony of ICCESD 2020 was held on 7 February 2020 at the Student Welfare Center (SWC) of KUET. Prof. M. A. Hannan, Rector, Engineering Staff College of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest in the inauguration ceremony. Honorable Vice-Chancellor of KUET, Prof. Dr. Quazi Sazzad Hossain was the Chief Patron of ICCESD 2020. The ceremony was presided over by the Conference Chair, Prof. Dr. Muhammed Harunur Rashid. Chair of ICE, South Asia Region, Engr. I. A. Khan and Prof. Vladimir Strezov of Macquarie University, Australia were present as the Special Guests. Vote of Thanks was delivered by the Conference Secretary, Prof. Dr. Sajal Kumar Adhikary. ICCESD 2020 conference was sponsored by Saif Port Holdings Limited, Wahid Construction Ltd, Bashundhara Cement Limited, Seven Rings Cement Limited and CRTS Civil, KUET.

The Closing Ceremony of ICCESD 2020 was held at night on 8 February 2020, which was followed by the Conference Dinner. Prof. M. A. Hannan, Rector, Engineering Staff College of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony. Vice-Chancellor of Sonargaon University (SU), Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Bashar; Head of Civil Engineering Department, Prof. Dr. S. M. Moniruzzaman were present as the Special Guests. The event was presided over by the Conference Chair, Prof. Dr. Muhammed Harunur Rashid. Prof. Dr. Aysha Akter, Chairman of Center for River, Harbor & Landslide Research of CUET; Dr. AHM Kamruzzaman, Geotechnical Engineer of Transport Roads & Maritime Services of NSW Government, Australia; A/Prof. Dr. Hadi Khabbaz, Deputy Head of School (Research), School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia; Prof. Dr. Vladimir Strezov, Macquarie University, Australia and Shaikh Jahangir Hossain, Assistant General Manager of Marketing, Sales & Distribution of Seven Rings Cement Ltd. spoke in the ceremony and shared their feeling about the conference.

Scientists, Engineers, Researchers and Scholars from different organization and universities in home and abroad, Deans of different faculties of KUET, Departmental Heads, Directors, Teachers, Officers, and Students participated in the conference. The Delegates, Scientists, Engineers, Experts and Guests expressed that the conference would be able to share knowledge and experiences to develop new ideas about proper utilization of Civil Engineering knowledge through the use of new technologies. In ICCESD 2020, there were five key note sessions, thirty two technical sessions, where 201 technical papers based on seven major themes were presented.

On 9 February 2020 at the end of the conference, a Conference Tour was also organized for the participants of ICCESD 2020. A two days long post-conference (ICCESD 2020) workshop on “Workshop on Geotechnical Engineering for Practicing Civil Engineers” was held at KUET on 10-11 February, 2020, which was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, KUET. A/Prof. Dr. Hadi Khabbaz, Deputy Head of School (Research), School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia; Dr. AHM Kamruzzaman, Geotechnical Engineer of Transport Roads & Maritime Services of NSW Government, Australia and Prof. Dr. Md. Rokonuzzaman, Department of Civil Engineering, KUET were the resource persons in the workshop. Engineers and Geotechnical Practitioners from different government organizations attended the workshop.
