Three days long (25-27 February 2017) 5th International conference on Solid Waste Management in South Asian Countries WasteSafe 2017 successfully held at KUET. The experts, participates at the conference expressed their hope highly that this conference will bring new horizon in solid waste management sectors in the developing countries. KUET, Bauhaus University, Weimer of Germany, University of Padova, Italy, International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and ORBIT Group jointly organized the conference aiming to exchange views and experiences at international level and to understand solid waste management concept. Administrator of Khulna Zila Parishad Mr. Sk. Harunur Rashid inaugurated the conference as the Chief Guest on 26 February Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Prof. Dr. Muhammed Alamgir, Chair, WasteSafe 2017 International Conference and Vice-Chancellor of KUET, delivered his welcome speech and presided over the function. Prof. Dr. Wermer Bidlingmaier, Pioneer & Leader of Waste Management, Germany, Prof. Dr. Echard Kraft, Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany, Prof. Dr. Maria Cristina Lavagnolo, University of Padova, Italy, Prof. Dr. Liz Bachhuber, Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany, Mr. Jason Mitchell Belanger, Country Director, SNV Bangladesh, Dr. Md. Khairul Islam, Country Representative, WaterAid Bangladesh addressed at the inaugural session.

A Theme Paper “New Perspectives Through Joint Research Activity” presented by the Prof. Dr. Liz Bachhuber at the inaugural session. Waste experts from different countries including Germany, Italy, Japan, Nepal, South Korea, India, Bangladesh participated in the conference. On February 26 at 07:30 p.m. Conference Dinner and an attractive cultural program were also held in a local hotel in this connection. A total number of 98 technical papers including, 1 Key-note Session, 3 key-note papers, 1 theme paper were presented in 12 parallel technical session where research scholars, experts, engineers, professionals of related field exchange views among themselves.

On February 27 at 05 p.m. the closing of the conference was held at the seminar room of Civil Engineering Dept. of KUET. Prof. Dr. Muhammed Alamgir, Chair, WasteSafe 2017 International Conference and Vice-Chancellor, KUET, presided over the function. Science and Engineering, Kathmandu University, Nepal, Dr. Quazi Hamidul Bari, Professor, CE, KUET, Dr. Pallab Kumar Choudhury, Professor, ECE, KUET, addressed at the closing session. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammed Alamgir thanked everybody for the successful closing of the conference. He declared that the 6th Int’l Conference on WasteSafe 2019, that will be held on 23-24 February 2019. Before this conference of WasteSafe 2017, the first, second, third & fourth conference were successfully held in respectively 2009, 2011, 2013 & 2015.
