Facilities

Since the establishment of this department, the authority and the faculty members have been working relentlessly to provide the students with any support they need to create an amicable learning environment. A few labs have already been set up with necessary equipment. More labs and equipment are soon to be introduced. The classrooms are equipped with multimedia facilities for comprehensive and interactive teaching. A list of Laboratory facilities are as follows:

Crystallography Lab

In this lab, basic crystallographic models are provided to the students so that they can learn to identify crystallographic unit cells, planes, and directions. They are also taught to analyse the symmetry in different structures. Currently, the lab has six physical models of different types of crystal structures. Software-generated models are also shown to the students for a more complete understanding of various crystal types.
This lab is equipped with - Crystal models, Computer, Projector.

Metallography Lab

In this lab, the study of structural characteristics of metals or alloys in relation to its properties with the help of optical microscopy can be performed. Currently, the lab has a camera-fitted metallurgical optical microscope capable of up to 1500X magnification. There are six other latest metallurgical microscopes which are useful for practical classes. Facilities for grinding and polishing metallic samples for observation under the microscope have been set up. This type of set up is crucial for successful micrography of the samples. Different types of cutters such as Abrasive Disk Cutter, Auto Disk Cutter, and Diamond Cutter for preparing suitable-sized samples will be added soon. This lab will be equipped with - Optical Microscopes, Ultrasonic cleaner, Sample Grinder, Polisher, Fine Polisher, Hot Mount, Cold Mount, Abrasive Disk Cutter, Auto Disk Cutter, Diamond Cutter, Polishing Accessories.

Materials Testing Lab

This lab features facilities for testing mechanical characteristics of materials such as strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, stiffness, fatigue properties, and so on. Currently, the lab has a 400 KN capacity hydraulic Universal Testing Machine (Tensile, Compression, Bending) and two macro-hardness testers (Brinell and Rockwell). Higher capacity UTMs will be procured in the future. Facilities for micro-hardness test, impact test, fatigue test, wear test, and non-destructive test will also be developed. The materials testing lab is vital for a complete profiling of materials used in various load-bearing applications.
This lab will be equipped with - several UTM, Bend test, Micro hardness test, Macro Hardness tester (Brinell, Rockwell, Shore), Charpy Impact Test, Fatigue Test

Materials Manufacturing Lab*

In this lab, the study of casting, machining, forming and joining of materials can be gained. Besides students can acquire knowledge about the testing of molding and core sand by permeability test, hardness test, sieve analysis, clay content test, and moisture content test. Students are also trained with foundry practices by using foundry tools. Forging operation is one of the most interesting topics to learn. Upsetting, drawing, and bending operations of the materials will help the student to be familiar with the factory environment. Pattern making, core making, mold making with the materials along with melting, pouring, and cleaning will help the students to gain basic knowledge about foundry practices and casting as well.
This Lab will be Equipped with: Pot Furnace, Induction Furnace, Casting Mold and dies, Crucible, Porosimeter, Green hardness tester, Sieving Machine.

Polymer and Composite Lab*

In this laboratory students will acquire specific knowledge on microstructure and mechanical properties of polymers along with investigation of polyethylene, environmental stress cracking in strained thermoplastics, determination of degree of crosslinking in cross-linked ethylene plastics, properties of polymeric melts. Besides, selection of polymeric materials in practical applications will adapt the students with working environments.
The study of Microstudy of different types of composite materials, study of geometrical characteristics of composite materials, anisotropic properties of composite materials, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion of composite materials will be done.
Work in the laboratory consists of specimen manufacture, preparation, inspection and monitoring, development of technical solutions, and testing. Components and specimen are produced by filament winding, vacuum infusion or from prepreg using autoclave, vacuum hot press or vacuum bagging.
Lab will be equipped with:
Hot Iso-static pressing, Autoclave, Vacuum degasser, Extrusion machine

Materials Characterization Lab*

Materials Characterization laboratory facilitates SEM, XRD, DSC, TGA, FTIR and so on. In this lab students will be able to detect the surface morphology, grain structure, phase distribution, compositional mapping of different materials using SEM. Besides that, the students can acquire keen knowledge of identification of different phases, semi-quantitative analysis and stress analysis of various sample through XRD technique. There will be opportunity to characterize the polymer sample via FTIR. Thermal Analysis of materials using DTA, DSC, TGA are also available. There will also be opportunity to analyze the particle size by Particle Size Analyzer and Surface Topography facility for further research on the advancement of materials properties.

Chemical Analysis Lab*

The lab facilitates with Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES) to determine C, Mn, Si, S and other components of solid materials along with wet chemical analysis facilities.
This lab will be equipped with -
Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES), Various Chemical Reagent, Apparatus, Furnace.

Heat Treatment Lab*

The study of heat treatments such as annealing, normalizing, and quenching of metallic alloys, heat-treated carbon and alloy steels, special cast irons and tool steels are done. This lab also facilitates to heat treatments of ceramics such as sintering and to determine microstructure of heat-treated nonferrous metals and alloys, and Case hardened steels. Besides, defects in heat treatment and its remedies can be found. Also facilitates obtaining the microstructure of Welded and bonded sample along with macro and micro-photographic studies of materials.

Ceramics Lab*:

This lab helps to prepare the ceramic powders and determine the powder characterization and Ceramic production processes by Melting, annealing and other heat treatment procedures.
This lab will be equipped with -
High Temperature Furnace, Electronic Balance, Hot Plate with Stirrer, Mortar and Pestle, Ball Mill and Press Mill.

Surface Engineering Lab*:

This lab facilitates with electrodeposition processes like copper, nickel and chromium plating, effect of deposition parameters on coating properties, effect of additives. Besides conversion coating processes including anodizing, hot dip galvanizing can also be done. Diffusion coating processes like chromizing, aluminizing etc. are also available. Wear and frictional behavior of materials can be determined in this laboratory.
This lab will be equipped with -
Various Chemical Reagents, Glass Apparatus, DC Power Supply, Electro Plating Cell, Anodizing, Corrosion Test.

Computer Lab*:

This lab is equipped with sufficient computers for learning programming and simulation for selecting new materials or help the student for further research.
This lab will be equipped with full set of computer and projector.
