Undergraduate Research:

The Undergraduate Research is a university-wide program dedicated to fostering scholarly engagement and intellectual growth. The mission is to make research an integral part of the undergraduate academic experience at the department of Mechanical Engineering by creating mutually beneficial research relationships between students and faculty researchers. The research starts here after completing the 3rd year 2nd term as well at starting of the final year. All students are distributed among our highly experienced faculty members to their thesis/project work.

Benefits for students:

  • Gain valuable research skills and relevant experience

  • Develop professional relationships with faculty members and other researchers

  • Earn credit hours for the undergraduate degree.

Benefits for faculty members and other researchers:

  • Receive research assistance from talented & motivated undergraduates

  • Get to know and mentor individual students

  • Provide valuable research training for the next generation of researchers

Graduate Research:

At the Mechanical Engineering department, graduate students can expect unsurpassed research opportunities across a wide spectrum of disciplines. With a large amount worth of research expenditures, KUET is consistently in the top of Bangladeshi institutions for research expenditures. Research Groups There are several research groups working continuously for developing their knowledge & skill. Almost all of the faculty members are involved in some sort of research group.

KUET AEROLAB:

Our newly formed Aerodynamics lab brings a new chapter in the field of aerodynamics and aeromechanics. Here highly motivated teachers and interested students turn their hope & dream into the reality. Recently This group is trying to develop Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) in this lab. The UAVs can perform several functions: surveillance, information gathering, data storage and their transmission to the ground stations, including the function of interference, when needed.

COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS:

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Fluid (gas and liquid) flows are governed by partial differential equations which represent conservation laws for the mass, momentum, and energy. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the Art of replacing such PDE systems by a set of algebraic equations which can be solved using digital computers. Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) provides a qualitative (and sometimes even quantitative) prediction of fluid flows by means of

  • mathematical modeling (partial differential equations)

  • numerical methods (discretization and solution techniques)

  • software tools (solvers, pre- and post-processing utilities)

AUTOMOBILE IC ENGINES & COMBUSTION

From its earliest days the department of Mechanical Engineering has produced research that matters, driven not only by the highest levels of intellectual curiosity and achievement, but also by the need for solutions to immediate problems in social, economic, and industrial practice. At this new century automotive vehicle has increased its performance to provide people more comfort with efficiency. Turbochargers and superchargers are turbine- driven forced induction device that makes an engine more efficient and produce more power for its size by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber. To improve its performance its Material property & geometry can be changed in various effective way. Variable geometry turbochargers (VGT's) are designed to allow the aspect ratio of the system to adjust to optimum levels depending on engine speeds. A key component in this system is a ring of aerodynamically-shaped, moveable, vanes in the housing at the turbine inlet. Complex geometry combined with a high temperature corrosive environment are ideally matched to the shape and materials capabilities of the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process.

ROBOTICS & CONTROL

Control and Robotics at the department of Mechanical Engineering is concerned with the general problem of modeling systems and machines, and then making them respond appropriately to inputs. Optimization and mathematical techniques play a key role, especially as systems of interest grow in scale. Control ranges from applications in semiconductor process control to hybrid and networked control to nonlinear and learning control, and includes interactions with faculty in Mechanical Engineering and Integrative Biology as well as between EEE and CSE. Robotics is interpreted broadly to include mobile autonomous systems from millimeter-sized mobile robots to 3 meter rotor span helicopters, fixed autonomous systems for assembly, as well as human augmentation capabilities such as Tele-Presence, and virtual reality. Providing robots with image understanding capabilities is one of the key research areas, as well as using computer vision to assist humans.
